The Y2K Bug
Twas the hour before midnight
before the millenial year
The people were waiting
some filled with great fear
There was a strange quiet
throughout the whole house
I noticed no twitching
of my Microsoft mouse
The planes are all parked
on their runways, we're told
For no one will fly them
no one is that bold
From all we had heard
and all that was said
Perhaps there was reason
to be filled with such dread
While some were quite sure
That whatever ensued
Not much would change
We’d not be unglued
While others were certain
as though hit by a truck
All of society
would become quickly unstuck
But others had quietly
accepted their fate
That all that they knew
would disintegrate
Our freezers were bulging
with the food we had bought
That they might not be running
we had given no thought
The bathtubs were filled up
with water, you see
In case rain stopped falling
in sunny BC
Our bank books showed zero
we'd removed all our cash
BC Hydro gave warning
stop growing your hash
If one could believe
What the pessimists said
One could be convinced
We’d be better off dead
But some had made millions
Through all of our fear
Bank balances were healthy
That really was clear
The minutes ticked by
only seconds to go
Would the bug really strike
well, soon we’d all know
At last midnight passed
I switched on my PC
And what I saw there
now filled me with glee
For Windows 2000
showed up on my screen
I clicked, and found Free Cell
where it always had been
All the people were happy
they nearly did bust
All systems were working
with super Pentium thrust
I turned off the light
and went back to my bed
It now became clear
that we’d all just been 'had'!
And now when you ask
about the y2k bug
You’ll find it’s been quietly
swept under a rug
